Born Again? — 7-25-2015
Leonard Ravenhill said, “I doubt that more than two percent of professing Christians in the United States are truly Born Again.” The professing Christian who is not Born Again may be a very faithful church goer. But there is a difference between a person who is “churchy” and one who is Born Again. A saved (Born Again) person can be churchy, but a strictly churchy person has never been Born Again. They never had that knock you off your donkey thing like Paul did. Never had a sit at Jesus’ feet and wash them with their tears experience. Some have been in church ALL their lives, but they never saw themselves as anything but a nice, decent person. They didn’t fit the profile of a sinful, lost person in need of a Savior. They let their ego and their church loyalty tell them they are fine when they are not!
The Born Again experience is kind of simple but it is mystical and profound. It is a SPIRITUAL experience. There is no one-size-fits-all way to be Born Again. It can happen anywhere, any time at the discretion of the lost person. Some have been saved in large crowds of people, others saved on their knees in their own home, just them and Jesus. And, there will be tears involved. Salvation is FREE but it is not cheap. Some people say, “It pays to serve the Lord.” That is NOT TRUE. It costs you to serve the Lord. He is an ALL OR NOTHING GOD. He even cautioned that people should add up the cost before they jumped on board.
Some have come to Jesus through fear of punishment. (Hell) Others come through hope of reward. (Heaven) It’s a start. But it is always a better way to first learn about Jesus, hear about Him and His great love for us and that of His Father God. How they planned together from the very beginning that Jesus would save the world through His death. Then, by the power of Holy Spirit calling us, we are able at the precisely right moment, to give our life, our plans, and our earthly goods to the Lord. From then on, all that we have, all that we are and all that we plan belongs to Him. We have come to Him not because we GET something, but because we have come to LOVE HIM for what He did for us. It is a privilege to serve God without fear here below. And it is a wonderful hope to serve Him with the surety of eternal life with Him in heaven.
If this message is beginning to touch your heart and you wonder about all of it, I AM PRAYING FOR YOU: that you will ask yourself if you are truly Born Again. Are you keenly aware of the Holy Spirit guiding your life? Do you pray and talk to the Lord regularly, acknowledging His presence? Or, are you working your way to heaven, rather than trusting salvation through Jesus? Do you ignore God like a person in the room that you have not met?
When we are saved, we get His Spirit! That Spirit is hard to deny, hard to ignore. We may call it conscience, but He is more than that. The Bible says to acknowledge the Lord and He will direct our path. We must believe in Jesus and the One who sent Him. Then, we start hearing His voice in our heart, and seeing what He wants to give us. And we will FEEL ourselves changing by the power of the Holy Spirit on the inside of us and His anointing on the outside of us. Like the clay on the potter’s wheel, He will gently mold us into what we were destined to be before life and numerous people told us what they thought of us. God has a different way of thinking about us!
This admonition comes with a warning. Jesus is our example. To serve God like He did, we have to do what He did. He gave His life to the mission God gave Him to do. He DIED. We must figure the cost before we join up. In some ways, it might even be easier to really die, rather than the whole “dying to self” thing. Our flesh dies hard! But we must put it away if our spirit is to come forth in truth and power. There is no place for self-centeredness or selfishness. We must not let others trample us, but we must not promote ourselves above others either. We are all the same in Jesus. I am just a beggar telling other beggars where I found bread.
Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6
