Are We Happy? — 11-2-13
There are various teachings going around over the last 30 years that tell us everything in God is for the happiness of mankind. They couch this ‘truth’ in terms with Bible-sounding catch phrases. Some have been so bold as to all but guarantee us fame and riches, which of course, is the straight line route to happiness, as we all know. Right? I mean, just look at all the people in Hollywood! In Washington DC.
While I believe the Lord blesses us in many ways, including at times with wealth, I also believe these false teachings essentially lead us to miss the point of what it means to belong to God and follow Jesus. I see most references to ‘happy’ or words like it are solidly connected to belonging to God, to knowing His laws, to cherishing His plans for us. Jesus spoke of His followers being rejected by others — friends, even family. He talked about us being kicked out of congregations, and other suffering for His name, even people thinking God wanted them to kill us. He talked about giving up houses and land and kin folks to follow Him.
Looking at the farewell words of our Master, we will find it is important that we are faithful, that we are productive and effective and Spirit-led in our efforts to finish His work that He commanded us to do. We stick with Jesus because He is our salvation, and to help with finishing the work He started, i.e., telling others how to be saved. I find only a few Bible references to our happiness, other than in eternity, and not so much about joining Jesus and getting rich. Paul said the Kingdom of God is righteousness and peace and JOY in the Holy Ghost. [Romans 14:17]
Can we and shouldn’t we, be happy and satisfied, content with that?
You are happy and blessings are yours, O people saved by the Lord. He is your shield of your help and He is the sword that exalts you. Deuteronomy 33:29
As arrows are in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth. Happy, blessed and enviable is the man whose quiver is filled with them! Psalm 127:5
Happy, blessed and enviable is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, and whose hope is in the Lord his God. Psalm 146:5
Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and gets understanding. Proverbs 3:13
Happy is that people whose God is The Lord. Psalm 144:15
